Hand Care: The Missing Step in Your Anti-Ageing Routine

Lifting. Typing. Styling. High-fiving. The list of things you do with your hands could go on forever, yet hand care slips at the bottom of our beauty priorities. Your hands are put to more daily use and abuse than your face and less pampering. So it’s not surprising that they “tattle-tale” your age quicker than any other part of your body.
While you can’t stop the natural, biological process of ageing, you can do a lot to prevent and reduce damage caused by external factors such as UV radiation, pollution and harsh chemicals. More importantly, taking care of your hands doesn’t have to be a major production. Here are 3 simple steps to help your hands look and feel good at any age:

#1 Sun protection

hand care, age spots, old hands

When was the last time you put sunscreen on your hands? If you don’t want them covered with age spots, you should be putting sunscreen on every day and reapplying after you wash your hands. Yes, age spots have nothing to do with age. They are the result of unprotected sun exposure. UV rays damage the DNA in skin cells which induces dark spots formation and uneven pigmentation. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 to shield your skin from the harmful effects of UV rays.

#2 Exfoliation

hand care, exfoliation

Our skin dries out quickly and takes longer to replenish itself as we age. With the loss of elasticity and hydration, veins that are not visible under plump skin become prominent and the skin on our hands starts to look crepey.
Regular exfoliation will remove dead cell build-ups and put your skin’s renewal process in boot camp. Use a retinol crème to improve rough skin texture and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Look for products enriched with vitamins E and C as they are natural antioxidants that restore and enhance skin barrier function.

#3 Hydration

hand care, hydration, hand creme

You probably put a lot more thought into choosing your face cleanser than you did your hand soap. But how often do you wash your hands compared to your face? Harsh detergents strip natural oils and moisture from the skin, leaving your hands dry, cracked and susceptible to irritation.
To protect your hands, hydrate regularly throughout the day, especially after contact with water. Use a rich, nourishing crème that restores hydration and stimulates skin barrier function. Oraser® Nourishing Hand Crème is formulated with nourishing shea butter and skin conditioners to provide a deep hydration and help diminish the appearance of age spots and uneven pigmentation.

Oily Skin Hydration: 3 Easy Ways to Winterproof Your Skin Without Breaking Out

Winter is in full swing which means you need to up your skincare game so as to keep your complexion balanced, hydrated and radiant. The cold dry air, coupled with even dryer indoor heating, takes a toll on all skin types. But for those of us struggling with oily skin the issue is twofold – how do we give our skin a hydration boost while keeping the T-zone shine at bay?

oily skin hydration, girl cleaning her face
Here is our action plan to help you hydrate, nourish and protect your skin in the winter without exacerbating oiliness and causing breakouts:

#1 Swap your gritty scrub for a gentle cleanser

There is no denying exfoliation is a crucial part of your skincare routine. However, over-exfoliating can do a real number on your skin, especially in the winter. When temperatures dip down and the wind whips up, you want to help your skin lock in as much moisture as possible. If you are scrubbing too hard and too frequently, you are not only removing excess oils but also getting rid of healthy cells and compromising your skin’s protective barrier. When natural moisture escapes from the skin, your sebaceous glands go into a frenzy and produce even more oil, trying to compensate for the loss of hydration.

So, instead of keeping your skin clean and smooth, you are doing the exact opposite – stimulating more sebum production. If you don’t want to get trapped in this vicious cycle, take a break from gritty exfoliators. Instead, switch to a gentle cleanser that cleans your skin thoroughly but doesn’t strip its natural moisture.

Offects® Exfoliating Cleanser combines BHA, to gently remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, whilst nourishing lipids boost hydration and skin softness. Use it daily to keep excess oil under control and give your skin the extra nourishment it needs in the winter.

#2 Use non-comedogenic sunscreen

We should all be in the habit of putting on sunscreen every day and reapplying it regularly – all year round. But most products on the high street are chalky and greasy and when you are in an eternal battle with shine and oiliness, the last thing you want to do is put a layer of thick, pore-clogging sunscreen on your face.

oily skin hydration, oclipse® daily sheer

However, this is not a good excuse to skip sun protection. Oclipse® Daily Sheer SPF 50 has a special, non-greasy formula that blends seamlessly into the skin and gives it a sheer matte finish. It dries quickly and provides broad-spectrum protection with zero chances of breakouts.

#3 Add a serum to your routine

People with oily skin often (and wrongly) avoid serums thinking their thick formula will exacerbate oiliness. The truth is that serums are serious hydration boosters and work for all skin types, including oily skin. If you want to nourish your skin without clogging your pores, serums are the much better choice that thick crèmes and moisturisers. The molecule structures of serums are smaller, so they can penetrate the skin surface deeper than moisturisers and hydrate the skin from within.

Ossential® C-Bright Serum contains naturally occurring lipids that support skin barrier restoration and help skin’s natural hydration process. It also helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and even your complexion.

How to calm rosacea flare ups

Winter brings its own set of skincare challenges especially if you’re one of the 1 in 10 people who suffer from rosacea. Keeping rosacea flare-ups under control in normal conditions is difficult enough as triggers are many and varied. But when you throw arctic winds, indoor heating and low humidity into the mix, it gets even more challenging to soothe your temperamental skin.

So, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite tips and products to help you beat the discomfort and how to calm rosacea flare-up during the chilly weather and keep your rosacea symptoms at bay:

#1 Avoid long, hot showers

rosacea flare-ups, hot water, steamy shower

So hard to do in the winter months, but necessary if you want to combat face flushing. Hot water strips the skin from its natural oils and moisture, so after a day of braving the cold, the last thing you want to do to your sensitive face is put it under a steaming hot shower.

#2 Cover up

rosacea-flare-ups, cold winter, cover face, scarf

Limit your cold exposure as much as you can. Infinity scarves are not only a good fashion choice, but you can pull them up and protect your face from the biting wind. When you suffer from rosacea, you always want to avoid dramatic changes in your body temperature. Try to layer your outfit, so you can quickly peel off when you start to feel too warm, after coming into a heated building from frosty outdoors.

#3 Turn the thermostat down

rosacea flare-ups, central heating, dry air

With freezing temperatures outside, it’s tempting to turn up the heating and snuggle up, when you get home. However, dry warm air doesn’t do your irritable skin any good. Instead of cranking up the heat, put on the humidifier. If you don’t have a central one, you can buy a portable humidifier or just put a bowl of water next to your radiators. It will put the much-needed moisture back in the air.

Revamp your rosacea skincare routine for winter

Choosing the right products for your winter routine is the most important part of your flare-up management. Any abrasive products can further irritate your already sensitive skin, so forget about scrubs, cleansing powders, and aggressive exfoliators. A good rosacea routine should consist of the following steps:

Protection

It might be tempting to skip sunscreen when the thermometer dips down below freezing, but just because you don’t feel the sun as much as you do in the summer, it doesn’t mean the UV rays are not damaging your skin.

oclipse-c Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50 ZO Medical
Oclipse-C™ is a non-irritating, mineral SPF 50 sunscreen, developed to protect the most sensitive skin types. It shields your skin from UVA, UVB, HEV and IR-A rays and supports its natural barrier function thanks to a slow-release antioxidant complex. Use daily to prevent your cheeks from turning red this winter.

Cleansing

If your skin is rosacea-prone, you need to be extra careful when choosing your cleansing products. Even the ones labelled for “sensitive” skin can cause irritation.

ZO Medical Rozatrol Rosacea Treatment

Rozatrol™ is an enzymatic exfoliator which provides ultra-mild cleanse and prevents excess sebum production. This little tube can be a lifesaver for anyone struggling with rosacea flare-ups. It not only cleans your skin thoroughly but also reliefs existing redness and inflammation thanks to its amino acid complex.

Hydration

The last step in your winter routine is the most obvious one…Hydration. At this time of the year, you want to give your skin a major hydration boost and lock in as much moisture as you can.

RESTORACALM Soothing Recovery Crème

For a quick flare-up relief, use the Restoracalm™ soothing recovery cream. It provides immediate comfort to dry, flushed skin and stimulates the natural restoration of the skin barrier. Restoracalm™ has been developed with silk sericin protein to support skin’s recovery process and prevent future irritation and signs of ageing.

Recommended Autumn Skincare Essentials

For those who want to give their skin a boost for the autumn, here are a few of our favourite skincare essentials that we believe will make a visible improvement to your complexion.

autumn skincare essentials

Cleanser

It’s essential to cleanse your skin both morning and night to ensure you remove all the impurities and dead skin cells to promote cell turnover and thus have a fresher, younger looking skin.

For Normal to Dry skin we recommend: Offects® Hydrating Cleanser

Dry skin requires a gentle cleanser that will not disrupt sebum which is why Offects® Hydrating Cleanser is perfect. It hydrates by helping to retaining moisture during the cleansing process and rejuvenates with it’s calming properties such as panthenol, which soothes, repairs and restores skin. In addition, this cleanser stimulates collagen production and contains allantoin, which cleans away dead skin cells and supports cellular renewal. All on top of it removing dirt, oil and makeup without leaving any residue. Washing your face never felt so good.

For Normal to Oily Skin we recommend: Offects® Exfoliating Cleanser

Cleansing is an important first step for all skin types, but for oily, acne-prone skin, it’s critical. The key to managing oily skin is gently exfoliating dull, dry skin cells that trap bacteria; reducing excess oil; and neutralising free radicals. Offects® Exfoliating Cleanser does all of that and goes one step further, by providing encapsulated Vitamin E, the most important antioxidant for healthy skin.

Nourishing Hydrator

No matter what your skin type, one of our skincare essentials is a good hydrating crème for both day and night. Even those with oily skin need to hydrate as without the proper hydration your skin will produce even more excessive oils as an overcompensation for the lack of hydration.

For the day we recommend: Ommerse® Renewal Crème
This crème is packed with pure retinol, powerful anti-oxidants and a soothing agent to repair the skin barrier and rejuvenate the skin. Oh, and one more thing. It’s a great all-day hydrator, too.

For the night we recommend: Ommerse® Overnight Recovery Crème
While you sleep, your skin becomes more active, repairing and regenerating skin cells. This is the most important time to strengthen and nourish your skin. Ommerse® Overnight Recovery Crème is the natural counterpoint to an active day–a little bit of R and R to calm and nourish the skin. It’s not sheer indulgence, though. While you sleep, retinol works to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, ceramides nourish and calming agents protect against inflammation.

Peel

Peels are always a firm recommendation from dermatologists and one of our favourite skincare essentials. As it lifts off the rough, dull surface layer of dead skin cells to help give skin the reflective glow that only comes from a smooth, even surface.

We recommend: ZO Medical’s Invisapeel™

This formulation uses a unique process to renew the epidermis, providing enhanced exfoliation without any flaking or peeling, leaving skin noticeably smoother, firmer and brighter. Specialized enzymes and alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) promote exfoliation to improve the texture and help even skin tone in addition to enhancing and accelerating the repair of most epidermal problems such as discoloration, flaky skin and roughness. What’s more this product is excellent for both facial and non-facial skin such as hands, arms and legs!

Anti-Ageing in Your Twenties

Is it ever too early to start using anti-ageing products? The short answer is no. Prevention is always easier than treatment so starting the fight against ageing in your twenties is a smart move.

Anti-Ageing in Your Twenties

Prevention Over Treatment

The skin is no different to any other organ in the body that suffers age-related degeneration. It’s much easier to prevent the decline than it is to reverse the process after it has happened.

To give your skin a fighting chance, you need to start taking care of it from a young age. However, that does not mean that solely using an anti-ageing cream lets you off the hook. Alongside using the right products such as ZO’s Ommerse® Renewal Crème  and Ommerse® Overnight Recovery Crème, you need to unlearn bad habits like leaving your makeup on overnight. By leaving makeup on, your pores get clogged, you get breakouts and your skin is just generally left looking dull and worse-for-wear. So it is essential that you always cleanse your skin properly before you go to bed.

Additionally, one of the biggest mistakes made by those in their twenties, is overlooking the importance of protecting skin from the sun. Exposure to the sun, no matter if its bright blue skies or a dull, overcast day, the UV rays emitted from the sun are harmful and damaging to the skin. Thus for skin to remain healthy and taut as you age, twenty-somethings should get a lead on using sunscreen like Oclipse® Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30. Not only does this product protect your skin from harmful UV rays and HEV light (the blue light omitted from smartphones) but it also doubles up as a makeup primer! A very nifty thing to have in your skincare routine!

The Autumn Skincare Advice You Need To Hear

Autumn has started to show itself; temperatures are dropping, and the weather’s getting wetter. But with this change in the seasons, many tend to neglect their skincare routine. Since the body is hidden under a ton of layers, it’s common for people to forget about the importance of maintaining healthy skin. But just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not there! Your skin probably needs more attention as the weather worsens. So here are the autumn skincare tips you absolutely need to know about for radiant skin this season.

autumn skincare

Exercise

Regular exercise boosts circulation and your immune system resulting in stronger and healthier skin.

Eat Your Greens…

and your reds, yellows and oranges! Basically, load up on your vegetables as they’re packed with antioxidants and other benefits. They help to protect your skin from pollution and UV rays.

Vitamin C

Speaking of UV exposure, your skin is likely still suffering from the after-effects of  summer. If you have an uneven skin tone, sun spots and hyperpigmentation, you can repair your skin with a vitamin C-packed brightening serum.

Use Sunscreen

Although it may not be sunny anymore, you should still use sunscreen in your autumn skincare routine.  UV rays can still penetrate the skin even if the weather is grey and gloomy! But the SPF in your foundation isn’t enough either, so use a sunscreen like ZO’s Oclipse® Sunscreen + Primer with SPF30  to protect yourself. Apply it to the face, neck, and chest every day in the morning. What makes this sunscreen even better is that it doubles up as a makeup primer too!

Eat more fish

Healthy fats, like the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, help lubricate the skin, keeping it elastic and supple over time. However, if you’re not a fan of seafood, don’t worry, taking a fish oil supplement will do the trick too!

Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate!

We can’t stress enough, how important it is to exfoliate your whole body. The dry autumn weather causes dead skin cells to build up on your body so be sure gently exfoliate twice a week. This will both remove dead skin cells and promote skin cell turnover to let your skin glow!

To keep your lips equally smooth, delicately scrub them with your toothbrush right after you brush your teeth. This will clear away flakiness and help prep lips for balm or color. As for dry, cracked heels, apply a hydrator with salicylic or lactic acid at night, then put on socks. Follow this with a pumice stone the next morning during your shower to promote exfoliation.

Avoid steaming hot showers!

They may be tempting, especially with the temperatures dropping. All you want to do after being out in the cold is to jump into a hot bath or shower but it’s the worst thing you could do! Hot showers strip the skin of its natural oils which then causes your skin to dry out, crack and peel. Hot water is one of the worst causes for dry skin, so try to take warm showers instead of blistering hot ones. Then, pat your skin dry after you’re done, do not rub.

Retinol

Include a retinol in your autumn skincare routine. Every other night, before bed, apply ZO’s Ossential® Daily Power Defense to help your skin maintain its youthful summer glow. Plus it’s a fantastic ingredient to fight against signs of ageing too! To manage the dryness associated with retinol apply a hydrator over the top.

Drink water!

It’s important to try to remind yourself to drink water. Even though you don’t necessarily feel thirsty, your body still need its. What’s more, the dry autumn air combined with indoor heating can cause your skin to dry out. So make sure to keep yourself hydrated!

Post-Workout Acne

Sweaty gym environments combined with a lazy skincare routine can cause all sorts of problems! Exercise obviously causes sweating which is why without the proper post-workout cleanse; breakouts or dehydration can occur. If you already suffer from problem skin such as oily skin, then skipping on cleansing makes you a real victim to post-workout acne.

Avoiding Post-Workout Acne

Of course, prevention is always easier than treatment and with post-workout acne, and there is actually quite a lot you can do to help yourself.

Sweaty Skin

Sweat is unavoidable when you have a good workout, and of course, it’s necessary to help balance your body temperature out. But when your sweat mixes with the natural body oils, product residue and potential dirt that has been pushed out of your pores during the workout; this can lead to trouble. Leaving your skin (both face and body) unwashed for too long after a workout is a breeding ground for acne. This gross mixture could re-settle into your skin, blocking pores and inflaming skin leading to acne breakouts.  Your body could be especially prone to post-workout acne if your wear tight-fitting exercise clothes. So try to wear loose-fitting clothing or go for the outfits specifically designed for working out, with moisture-absorbing abilities. Plus, of course, just try to take a shower as soon as you can after your workout.

Dirty Equipment

Gym equipment is enemy number one when it comes to your skin. Yoga mats, weights and exercise machines all tend to harbour bacteria and dirt collected from use by lots of different (sweaty) people. Yuck! So, to avoid transferring bacteria to the skin and prevent post-workout acne, always wipe down your equipment before and after every use. Also, try to avoid touching your face or any other areas that are prone to breaking out.

Secret anti aging solutions

Over the years, your skin starts to change at both its cellular and structural level. Resulting in a gradual and slow change of its appearance. External conditions affect the skin more than any other organs. Sun exposure, pollution, temperature fluctuations, stress and hormonal changes are just a few of the factors that can impact the skin. The initial modification happens at the dermis level, with a gradual degeneration elastin and collagen production. This then causing visible changes on the surface such as dryness, dehydration, wrinkles and sagging skin. So what is the solution to dealing with ageing skin?

Slowing Down Ageing Skin

In order to slow down the signs of ageing, it is necessary to lead a healthy and balanced life. This means everything from no smoking to engaging in regular exercise. Alongside a healthy lifestyle, the use of anti-ageing skincare plays an important role in protecting the skin from aggressive external factors. Having a solid daily skincare routine is crucial. Learn what products you should be using for your skin type on a daily basis here.

Anti-Ageing Power Product ageing skin

ZO Skin Health and Medical offer a range of products that keep the skin healthy, preventing premature ageing and avoiding future skin damage. However, one of our favourite products for battling ageing skin has to be the Ossential® Advanced Radical Night Repair. When it comes to anti-ageing, Dr Obagi doesn’t mess around and this product proves it.

Retinol is the most effective topical ingredient for ageing skin but for it to be truly effective, it has to reach a concentration in the skin of at least 0.6-0.7%. Typical over-the-counter retinol products only contain about 0.15% which is not enough to make a difference to the skin. Which is why Dr Obagi was formulated a truly effective over-the-counter anti-ageing product.

Ossential® Advanced Radical Night Repair has a 1% concentration of retinol. This can effectively activate and stimulate your skin cells. It repairs and rebuilds collagen, brightens the skin, minimises redness and defends against future damage, to name a few benefits. If you pick one product for ageing skin, let it be this one.

What Dermatologists Wish You Would Do

Discover what dermatologists find to be the most common skin mistakes and habits. The likelihood of you being guilty of one of these is high. So check out the list below and see how you could make a huge difference to your skin’s appearance.

dermatologists

Cleanse Properly

One of the most important skincare steps for women is to take your makeup off every evening.  One of the worst things dermatologists you could do to your skin is sleep with your makeup still on, even if you plan to wash it off in the morning. Your skin needs a gentle, yet thorough cleansing both morning and night to rid the skin of any lingering dirt and bacteria. So make sure to exfoliate and cleanse!

Don’t Pick Your Spots

This one is pretty obvious, but one that many need to be reminded of! Stop picking or popping your spots. The minute you touch a spot you’re only making it worse. If you pick, scratch or squeeze a spot you’re introducing bacteria to the area and spreading the bacteria from that spot to other parts of your face. This resulting in more spots! So, the best thing for you to do, no matter how tempting it may be, is to keep your hands away and only treat it with the right products.

Skipping Conditioner

You’re probably wondering why this is even included since hair has nothing to do with your skin. But what about your scalp? Your scalp is skin after all, so if you skip conditioner when you shower, you’re essentially skipping the hydrating stage for your scalp. If your scalp is kept nourished and hydrated then your hair will be healthier, bouncier and shinier than ever.

Be More Gentle

Last but not least, just be more gentle with your skin. Many handle their skin so roughly; rubbing, pulling or picking at it, but you need to stop. The harsher you handle your skin the more damage you are doing to it. You could even cause premature wrinkling. For example, the skin around your eye is very sensitive, so when applying anything whether it be an eye cream or eye makeup, you must make sure to be extra gentle when applying eyeliner. Even when removing your eye makeup, do not scrub and rub your eyes, be very gentle with them.

How To Fight Signs of Ageing

anti ageing tips

Do you want to grow old gracefully? Then follow our top tips on preventing, protecting and fighting against signs of ageing.

Use Your Skincare Products as Directed

While this might sound like common sense, it’s very common practice for some to go overboard with their skincare. Whether it’s excitement at having a new product or impatient at slow results. Active ingredients can do more harm than good when used too much. Applying more than recommended can cause clogged pores, an uneven complexion and many other unwanted effects. So just be patient and follow instructions to get the best results.

Stop Using Products that Sting or Burn Unless Prescribed by a Dermatologist

Irritating the skin makes signs of ageing more noticeable. Some anti-ageing products prescribed by a dermatologist may burn or sting.  When using a prescription anti-ageing product, this can be okay. Just be sure to let your dermatologist know.

Give the Product Time to Work

As mentioned above, while a hydrator can immediately plump up fine lines, most products take some time for results to appear, so be patient.

Do Not Sunbathe

Regardless of whether you get your tan from natural sunlight or a tanning bed, these are both dangerous practices. This is because you are exposing your skin to harmful UV rays that can accelerate ageing, such as an onset of wrinkles, brown spots and a blotchy complexion. What’s more, it can cause skin cancer. As an alternative, if you are absolutely desperate for a tan, why not apply a self-tanning cream to achieve a summer glow, the safe way.

tannin ageing

Sun Protection

Speaking of harmful UV rays, you must wear an SPF year round to protect your skin. 80% of UV rays still penetrate a cloudy sky, so you’re still susceptible to sun damage, even it’s not blazing hot. Why not use the Oclipse® Sunscreen + Primer. This multi-tasking beauty works to protect your skin and doubles as a makeup primer!

If you Smoke, Stop Now!

Apart from the countless health complications, smoking also greatly speeds up ageing skin. It causes wrinkles as well as a dull, sallow complexion.

Avoid Repetitive Facial Expressions

When you make a facial expression, such as squinting or frowning you contract the underlying muscles. If you repeatedly contract the same muscles for many years, these lines become permanent. So try to get out of the habit.

Follow ZO’s Recommended Daily Skincare Program
