Recommended Autumn Skincare Essentials

For those who want to give their skin a boost for the autumn, here are a few of our favourite skincare essentials that we believe will make a visible improvement to your complexion.

autumn skincare essentials

Cleanser

It’s essential to cleanse your skin both morning and night to ensure you remove all the impurities and dead skin cells to promote cell turnover and thus have a fresher, younger looking skin.

For Normal to Dry skin we recommend: Offects® Hydrating Cleanser

Dry skin requires a gentle cleanser that will not disrupt sebum which is why Offects® Hydrating Cleanser is perfect. It hydrates by helping to retaining moisture during the cleansing process and rejuvenates with it’s calming properties such as panthenol, which soothes, repairs and restores skin. In addition, this cleanser stimulates collagen production and contains allantoin, which cleans away dead skin cells and supports cellular renewal. All on top of it removing dirt, oil and makeup without leaving any residue. Washing your face never felt so good.

For Normal to Oily Skin we recommend: Offects® Exfoliating Cleanser

Cleansing is an important first step for all skin types, but for oily, acne-prone skin, it’s critical. The key to managing oily skin is gently exfoliating dull, dry skin cells that trap bacteria; reducing excess oil; and neutralising free radicals. Offects® Exfoliating Cleanser does all of that and goes one step further, by providing encapsulated Vitamin E, the most important antioxidant for healthy skin.

Nourishing Hydrator

No matter what your skin type, one of our skincare essentials is a good hydrating crème for both day and night. Even those with oily skin need to hydrate as without the proper hydration your skin will produce even more excessive oils as an overcompensation for the lack of hydration.

For the day we recommend: Ommerse® Renewal Crème
This crème is packed with pure retinol, powerful anti-oxidants and a soothing agent to repair the skin barrier and rejuvenate the skin. Oh, and one more thing. It’s a great all-day hydrator, too.

For the night we recommend: Ommerse® Overnight Recovery Crème
While you sleep, your skin becomes more active, repairing and regenerating skin cells. This is the most important time to strengthen and nourish your skin. Ommerse® Overnight Recovery Crème is the natural counterpoint to an active day–a little bit of R and R to calm and nourish the skin. It’s not sheer indulgence, though. While you sleep, retinol works to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, ceramides nourish and calming agents protect against inflammation.

Peel

Peels are always a firm recommendation from dermatologists and one of our favourite skincare essentials. As it lifts off the rough, dull surface layer of dead skin cells to help give skin the reflective glow that only comes from a smooth, even surface.

We recommend: ZO Medical’s Invisapeel™

This formulation uses a unique process to renew the epidermis, providing enhanced exfoliation without any flaking or peeling, leaving skin noticeably smoother, firmer and brighter. Specialized enzymes and alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) promote exfoliation to improve the texture and help even skin tone in addition to enhancing and accelerating the repair of most epidermal problems such as discoloration, flaky skin and roughness. What’s more this product is excellent for both facial and non-facial skin such as hands, arms and legs!

Treating Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are a form of scarring that appears when the skin has been stretched beyond its capacity and the dermis has consequently been torn. They commonly occur after either dramatic weight gain, weight loss or from pregnancy.stretch marks

What Do They Look Like?

Stretch marks tend to appear as long and thin reddish-purple marks to start with, before gradually fading to a silvery-white colour. They usually affect areas where fat is stored but can occur anywhere where the skin is stretched.

The most common areas you can find stretch marks are:

  • tummy (abdomen)
  • breasts
  • upper arms
  • buttocks
  • thighs
  • shoulders (usually in bodybuilders)

How Can You Treat Stretch Marks?

The best way to treat these imperfections is to exfoliate and hydrate the skin. By using a good resurfacing exfoliator in your daily routine and combining it with a nourishing repair serum, you can dramatically improve the appearance of stretch marks.

The ZO’s Oraser Body Emulsion Plus  is the best body product available without a prescription. With ingredients like retinol, ceramides and emollients, it prevents moisture loss and allows your skin to regain its youthful appearance, texture and tone. Plus, the formulation contains an antioxidant-rich complex with lactic acid to soften rough patches. The Body Emulsion Plus works to perfectly exfoliate, hydrate and nourish for revived and smoother looking skin.

Post-Workout Acne

Sweaty gym environments combined with a lazy skincare routine can cause all sorts of problems! Exercise obviously causes sweating which is why without the proper post-workout cleanse; breakouts or dehydration can occur. If you already suffer from problem skin such as oily skin, then skipping on cleansing makes you a real victim to post-workout acne.

Avoiding Post-Workout Acne

Of course, prevention is always easier than treatment and with post-workout acne, and there is actually quite a lot you can do to help yourself.

Sweaty Skin

Sweat is unavoidable when you have a good workout, and of course, it’s necessary to help balance your body temperature out. But when your sweat mixes with the natural body oils, product residue and potential dirt that has been pushed out of your pores during the workout; this can lead to trouble. Leaving your skin (both face and body) unwashed for too long after a workout is a breeding ground for acne. This gross mixture could re-settle into your skin, blocking pores and inflaming skin leading to acne breakouts.  Your body could be especially prone to post-workout acne if your wear tight-fitting exercise clothes. So try to wear loose-fitting clothing or go for the outfits specifically designed for working out, with moisture-absorbing abilities. Plus, of course, just try to take a shower as soon as you can after your workout.

Dirty Equipment

Gym equipment is enemy number one when it comes to your skin. Yoga mats, weights and exercise machines all tend to harbour bacteria and dirt collected from use by lots of different (sweaty) people. Yuck! So, to avoid transferring bacteria to the skin and prevent post-workout acne, always wipe down your equipment before and after every use. Also, try to avoid touching your face or any other areas that are prone to breaking out.

Treating Post-Workout Acne

If you haven’t managed to avoid the dreaded post-gym breakout. Don’t worry. We’ve got some tips to help you treat it.

  • To treat blemishes, use products with salicylic acid in them. So we recommend cleansing your skin with the Offects® Exfoliating Cleanser which will help to gently remove impurities and excess oil. What’s more, it’s exfoliating ingredients, including salicylic acid, unclog pores, ease out blackheads and keep skin clear.
  • If you want to disguise your acne, till it goes away, use the Offects® Correct and Conceal Acne Treatment. This is a concealer for acne designed to both cover visible blemishes and provide an effective spot treatment. This concealer is also an anti-inflammatory to calm the skin and soothe redness as well as helping the skin clear away bacteria to reduce breakouts.
  • For a deep-pore treatment, use the Offects® Sulfur Masque. This face mask for oily skin absorbs surface oil, sloughs off dead skin cells and removes dirt from pores to leave you with refreshed skin. Formulated with 10% sulfur for an extremely effective acne treatment; the Offects® Sulfur Masque reduces sebum production and calms irritated skin. What’s more, this face mask includes ingredients to replenish hydration in the skin and restore skin’s barrier function to avoid future damage. So, your skin won’t feel parched or stripped of its natural oils.

How To Fight Signs of Ageing

anti ageing tips

Do you want to grow old gracefully? Then follow our top tips on preventing, protecting and fighting against signs of ageing.

Use Your Skincare Products as Directed

While this might sound like common sense, it’s very common practice for some to go overboard with their skincare. Whether it’s excitement at having a new product or impatient at slow results. Active ingredients can do more harm than good when used too much. Applying more than recommended can cause clogged pores, an uneven complexion and many other unwanted effects. So just be patient and follow instructions to get the best results.

Stop Using Products that Sting or Burn Unless Prescribed by a Dermatologist

Irritating the skin makes signs of ageing more noticeable. Some anti-ageing products prescribed by a dermatologist may burn or sting.  When using a prescription anti-ageing product, this can be okay. Just be sure to let your dermatologist know.

Give the Product Time to Work

As mentioned above, while a hydrator can immediately plump up fine lines, most products take some time for results to appear, so be patient.

Do Not Sunbathe

Regardless of whether you get your tan from natural sunlight or a tanning bed, these are both dangerous practices. This is because you are exposing your skin to harmful UV rays that can accelerate ageing, such as an onset of wrinkles, brown spots and a blotchy complexion. What’s more, it can cause skin cancer. As an alternative, if you are absolutely desperate for a tan, why not apply a self-tanning cream to achieve a summer glow, the safe way.

tannin ageing

Sun Protection

Speaking of harmful UV rays, you must wear an SPF year round to protect your skin. 80% of UV rays still penetrate a cloudy sky, so you’re still susceptible to sun damage, even it’s not blazing hot. Why not use the Oclipse® Sunscreen + Primer. This multi-tasking beauty works to protect your skin and doubles as a makeup primer!

If you Smoke, Stop Now!

Apart from the countless health complications, smoking also greatly speeds up ageing skin. It causes wrinkles as well as a dull, sallow complexion.

Avoid Repetitive Facial Expressions

When you make a facial expression, such as squinting or frowning you contract the underlying muscles. If you repeatedly contract the same muscles for many years, these lines become permanent. So try to get out of the habit.

Follow ZO’s Recommended Daily Skincare Program

Eye rejuvenation treatment

The skin around your eyes is the most delicate area of your face and the first place to show signs of ageing. Pigmentation, sagging, fine lines and wrinkles are among the most common age-related changes that affect the eye area.

eye repairSigns of Ageing

In addition, in your 30s, you’re likely to see ‘dynamic wrinkles’ appear. These are the parallel vertical lines that form between the eyebrows, fine lines at the corners of the eyes (aka crow’s feet), and horizontal lines that run across the forehead. They are caused by repetitive facial movements and general skin ageing. Nonetheless, very deep lines and wrinkles can be avoided if people are more careful in regards to sun exposure. Wrinkles are exacerbated by sun damage.

Similarly, for those in their mid-30s, pigmentation and skin discolouration start to form just below the eyes. This is often caused by prolonged periods of sun exposure.

Another consequence of ageing is the loosening and protruding fat in the under eye area. This is commonly referred to as an under eye bag. Under eye bags occur when the muscles in your lower eyelids begin to weaken. Skin becomes slack and fatty deposit starts to store under the eye, causing the skin to swell and become more visible. In addition, dark shadows which appear under the eyes are due to hollow grooves developing under the eyes in the tear troughs.

How to Treat the Eye Area?eye repair

There are a variety of treatment options available for eye repair. From toxin injections to soften fines lines and wrinkles to dermal fillers which can plump out the hollows of the skin. Peels, lasers and light-based treatments can help to resurface the skin, improving skin laxity and discolouration. Older patients can also benefit from upper and lower blepharoplasty to remove excess skin and fat as well as tighten loose muscles.

Selecting a treatment plan must also include topical agents to ensure you maintain a youthful and healthy skin condition. We have developed two essential eye repair treatments in the ZO range to target the key components of eyelid ageing; the ZO Skin Health Olluminate® Intense Eye Repair and the ZO Medical Hydrafirm™.

ZO Skin Health Olluminate® Intense Eye Repair

Olluminate® Intense Eye Repair has stabilised retinol and advanced peptides to fortify the skin around the eye area and thus decrease fine lines and wrinkles. It also promotes collagen production and includes optical diffusers to reduce dark circles. What’s more, it contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to help protect the skin against free radical damage.

ZO Medical Hydrafirm™

Hydrafirm™ is specifically designed to help diminish fine lines and wrinkles and restore skin’s elasticity by encouraging natural collagen production. It helps to rapidly reduce the appearance of puffiness as well as targeting the appearance of dark circles. Hydrafirm™ increases suppleness and hydration to replenish the skin’s barriers. Additionally, it provides antioxidant protection to prevent future damage.

The Nontraditional Skin Health Restoration For All Skin Types

skin health restorationTraditional dermatologic treatments typically address the skin surface and symptoms without improving cellular function or overall skin condition. While this may enhance the skin’s appearance, results vary widely and are usually short-lived since the source of the problem is never addressed. Reasons for this may include the physician’s personal approach, patient noncompliance, product efficacy (penetration, amount of application), patient skin type (thick, thin, oily, dry) or development of resistance to certain products. Dr. Obagi’s new skin health restoration program eliminates most – if not all – of these variables with a standard treatment approach to any skin problem. By taking this approach, program results are consistent, reproducible by any physician and achievable by any patient.

Skin Health Restoration Overview

  • Overcome skin resistance to medical topical agents by limiting their use since skin can acquire tolerance and resistance to many topical agents, leading to  treatment failure and complications.
  • Incorporate non-medical products into the maintenance phase that can be used indefinitely.
  • Adopt an early, effective, daily and preventative program using non-medical products that work to keep skin looking and acting healthy.
  • Normalize barrier function, as compromised barrier function is the most common cause of persistent sensitivity, chronic dryness and susceptibility to inflammation and treatment intolerance.
  • Protect and repair DNA since damaged DNA is responsible for cellular dysfunction, inadequate renewal, mutation and skin cancer.
  • Eliminate chronic skin inflammation, which is a common cause of treatment intolerance, failure and sensitivity.
  • Stabilise the skin by increasing its tolerance and resistance to damaging factors.

Winter Skincare

Winter Skincare
We all know we shouldn’t be lazy when it comes to our winter skincare regime. Yet every year when the colder months come around, we find ourselves slacking on the routine we were so dedicated to, during the summer. It’s easy to become indifferent to skincare when you’re covered by a ton of layers, but trust us when we say, your skin will thank you for being attentive year-round!
Here are a few tips to keep in mind when updating your winter skincare routine.

GSR™: Getting Skin Ready

ZO Skin Health’s first steps to achieving healthy skin are; cleanse, scrub and oil-control. These objectives enable the skin to function properly and to tolerate all daily exposure and activities.

Correction

You can correct and restore the surface texture of your skin through exfoliation. Exfoliating promotes skin-cell turnover and avoids a build up of dead skin cells to allow your skin to look it’s freshest.

SPF

Remember to ensure that your daily primer or cream has SPF such as our Oclipse Sunscreen + Primer in SPF30. UV rays can still damage your skin even in winter so an SPF is always essential.

Stabilisation

As the temperatures drop and indoor heating rises, it will cause your skin to become dull and lack-lustre. So after you’ve cleansed your face, it’s essential that you strengthen your skin and restore normal hydration to it. ZO’s Ossential Daily Power Defense is the perfect serum as it speeds up the skin’s natural mechanism to repair DNA damage and protect against future oxidative damage. In addition to providing antioxidant protection to combat free-radical damage and restore the skin’s barrier system.

Diet

During the summer you’re constantly drinking water because of the warmer weather but in the winter it’s still just as important to keep yourself hydrated. It doesn’t matter how good your skincare routine is, if you’re not drinking enough your water, your skin will be negatively affected. Alongside a healthy supply of water, your body also needs as good a diet as ever, so avoid the comfort foods and stick to healthy alternatives.
