4 Myths You Probably Believe About Your Pores

The biggest misconceptions about your pores that are getting in your way to great skin:

Myth #1: The sun can shrink your pores

pores, sun exposure, myths about your pores

In reality unprotected sun exposure does the complete opposite. UV radiation breaks down collagen and elastin—the proteins that keep your skin supple, healthy and resilient. And with less collagen to keep them tight, your pores start to slacken and become more apparent. So, do yourself (and your skin) a favour and slather on the sunscreen.

Myth #2: You can open and close pores

pores, steaming face, myths about your pores

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been told that you can steam your pores open. This might just be the biggest skincare misconception out there. Your pores dilate like a camera lens and go from narrow to wide or wide to narrow, but there is no magical way to “open” them. What steaming really does is help loosen the excess oils and debris that build up inside pores and make it easier to clean them.

Myth #3: You can shrink your pores permanently

pores, shrinking pores, myths about your pores

This is one is hard to swallow, but unfortunately, your pore size is determined by your genes. While you can’t permanently change the size of your pores, you can do a lot to improve their appearance. Chemical exfoliants and topical retinoids are your best allies in the fight against enlarged pores. These products increase cell turnover, purge excess oil and dirt from your pores and improve the overall texture of your skin.

If you like multitasking products (who doesn’t?!), Ossential Instant Pore Refiner will become a staple for your beauty bag. This serum is light as a feather and clinically proven to minimise the appearance of pores. Thanks to its exclusive formulation, packed with fruit extracts and antioxidants, Ossential Instant Pore Refiner prevents pore congestion and defends your skin against harmful environmental factors.

Myth #4: Blackheads always mean clogged pores

pores, squeezing blackheads, sebaceous filament, myths about your pores

Many people think that black dots on their nose are clogged pores or blackheads. They are, in fact mostly fine hair follicles or a combination of sebum and skin cells called sebaceous filaments. Sebaceous filaments are a naturally occurring part of the skin’s system designed to distribute oil. Unlike blackheads and pimples, they are not filled with dirt and dead cell debris, so you shouldn’t worry about them and definitely should not try to squeeze them.

4 Signs You Are Over-Exfoliating Your Skin

over-exfoliating, signs of over-exfoliation

There’s no denying exfoliation is a wonderful thing for your skin. A good scrubbing session takes off dirt and excess oils, boosts circulation and leaves your face smooth and silky. But too much of a wonderful thing can be a bad thing. Over-exfoliating is the one skincare mistake almost all of us make. While we scrub and peel our faces in an attempt to keep our skin happy and healthy, too much of it is doing more harm than good. Here are the 5 signs of over-exfoliation to watch out for:

#1. Your face is too shiny

If your face shines like a disco ball, you need to give it a break from exfoliators. Light reflects off over-exfoliated skin easily, because its natural texture has been overly smoothed (yes, there is such a thing as too much smoothness).

#2. Your breakouts are getting worse

Excessive exfoliation strips your skin from its natural moisture which prompts your sebaceous glands to produce more oil to compensate for the loss of hydration. In addition, scrubbing too aggressively too often can disrupt skin’s lipid barrier and hinders its ability to protect the under-layers from bacteria and free radicals.

#3. Your skin feels like it was sunburned

Redness, itchiness, and puffiness are all inflammatory responses, signalling that your skin is in distress. The top layer of your epidermis acts like a shield against allergens, irritants and pollutants. When this natural exterior barrier is compromised, your skin becomes more susceptible to irritants and environmental damage.

#4 Your skin feels like crepe paper

When you are over-exfoliating, you are scrubbing away healthy skin cells and lipids that help your skin retain its natural hydration levels. If your skin feels flaky and fine lines suddenly become more visible, that’s a sure sign your skin doesn’t retain sufficient moisture.

Recommended Autumn Skincare Essentials

For those who want to give their skin a boost for the autumn, here are a few of our favourite skincare essentials that we believe will make a visible improvement to your complexion.

autumn skincare essentials

Cleanser

It’s essential to cleanse your skin both morning and night to ensure you remove all the impurities and dead skin cells to promote cell turnover and thus have a fresher, younger looking skin.

For Normal to Dry skin we recommend: Offects® Hydrating Cleanser

Dry skin requires a gentle cleanser that will not disrupt sebum which is why Offects® Hydrating Cleanser is perfect. It hydrates by helping to retaining moisture during the cleansing process and rejuvenates with it’s calming properties such as panthenol, which soothes, repairs and restores skin. In addition, this cleanser stimulates collagen production and contains allantoin, which cleans away dead skin cells and supports cellular renewal. All on top of it removing dirt, oil and makeup without leaving any residue. Washing your face never felt so good.

For Normal to Oily Skin we recommend: Offects® Exfoliating Cleanser

Cleansing is an important first step for all skin types, but for oily, acne-prone skin, it’s critical. The key to managing oily skin is gently exfoliating dull, dry skin cells that trap bacteria; reducing excess oil; and neutralising free radicals. Offects® Exfoliating Cleanser does all of that and goes one step further, by providing encapsulated Vitamin E, the most important antioxidant for healthy skin.

Nourishing Hydrator

No matter what your skin type, one of our skincare essentials is a good hydrating crème for both day and night. Even those with oily skin need to hydrate as without the proper hydration your skin will produce even more excessive oils as an overcompensation for the lack of hydration.

For the day we recommend: Ommerse® Renewal Crème
This crème is packed with pure retinol, powerful anti-oxidants and a soothing agent to repair the skin barrier and rejuvenate the skin. Oh, and one more thing. It’s a great all-day hydrator, too.

For the night we recommend: Ommerse® Overnight Recovery Crème
While you sleep, your skin becomes more active, repairing and regenerating skin cells. This is the most important time to strengthen and nourish your skin. Ommerse® Overnight Recovery Crème is the natural counterpoint to an active day–a little bit of R and R to calm and nourish the skin. It’s not sheer indulgence, though. While you sleep, retinol works to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, ceramides nourish and calming agents protect against inflammation.

Peel

Peels are always a firm recommendation from dermatologists and one of our favourite skincare essentials. As it lifts off the rough, dull surface layer of dead skin cells to help give skin the reflective glow that only comes from a smooth, even surface.

We recommend: ZO Medical’s Invisapeel™

This formulation uses a unique process to renew the epidermis, providing enhanced exfoliation without any flaking or peeling, leaving skin noticeably smoother, firmer and brighter. Specialized enzymes and alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) promote exfoliation to improve the texture and help even skin tone in addition to enhancing and accelerating the repair of most epidermal problems such as discoloration, flaky skin and roughness. What’s more this product is excellent for both facial and non-facial skin such as hands, arms and legs!

Chemical Peels vs. Face Scrubs

An effective exfoliator is essential for any good skin care routine but what’s the difference between using a face scrub or getting a chemical peel? And which one is right for you? To help you come to a decision, it’s good to understand all the ins-and-outs of these two types of exfoliators.

Do chemical peel results outweigh those of a facial scrub? Or maybe, a scrub is more time-friendly for you. Find out below.

What is a Chemical Peel?

peel is a chemical exfoliator that usually has a watery, gel-like consistency. They are designed to remove the top layer of skin to reveal a fresh, healthy layer beneath it. There are at-home peels and in-office peels. At-home chemical peels, such as the ZO Medical Invisapeel™ are more moderate in their treatment intensity and can be applied by yourself.

Increasingly aggressive chemical peels are used to treat more stubborn skin problems like melasma or severe acne. These must be carried out by a skin health professional.

Discover the different chemical peels ZO® offers here.

What is a Face Scrub?

A facial scrub is a manual exfoliation that is usually a liquid-type product with a gritty texture. When applied and massage into the skin helps to slough away dead skin cells, to reveal smoother skin. Scrubs are easier to attain as you can find them in most beauty aisles in high-street stores. But you should avoid those that contain naturally derived grains as their exfoliating ingredient such apricot kernels, or natural seeds as they can cause skin irritation, especially for sensitive, rosacea and acne skin. An exfoliator such as the Offects® Exfoliating Polish contains round magnesium crystals to exfoliate dead skin cells without aggravating the skin.

Which is Better On the Whole?

This is actually kind of a trick question. As we’d actually say both. Dr Obagi believes that a scrub should be part of your daily skincare routine. It is actually a necessary step in his GSR™: Get Skin Ready protocol and recommended to use for prepping the skin prior to a peel. A face scrub can ensure your chemical peel better penetrates the skin for optimal results.

Although getting a chemical peel is dependent on your skin type. If you have very sensitive and intolerant skin, for example, a peel may be too unbearable for you. You should work with your skin health professional to build up your skin’s tolerance before starting on chemical peels. A chemical peel is more powerful and penetrates much deeper within the skin than scrubs do. They are fantastic for those with skin problems such as severe acne, uneven textured skin tone, hyperpigmentation and ageing skin.

ZO Medical 3-Step Peel™

For this particular acne case, Ella was recommended the 3-Step Peel™.

This peel is a solution of 17% salicylic acid, 10% trichloracetic and 5% lactic acids to remove the outer layers of the skin. A 6% retinol crème is then applied following the peel solution to stimulate deeper layers of the skin maximising collagen production, cellular renewal, anti-oxidant benefits and DNA protection. The retinol stimulation is continued with an at-home application at least 5 hours after the peel solution is applied in the clinic. A calming crème, which is hydrating and anti-inflammatory, is also given for at home application 3 times daily.

Find out more about the 3-Step Peel™.

Ella’s peel story

Ella experienced redness and peeling skin for 8 days following the peel, hear about her experience of the peel and the amazing results:

“After suffering from acne for the last three years, in November 2015 I had finally had enough. I had tried to clear up my skin with every method you could imagine, I even found out what my blood type was and kept to a very strict diet. So I turned to ZO for help. I was advised to have the 3-Step Peel™ and told I would have to prepare.

I was advised to have the 3 Step Peel and told I would have to prepare my skin before treatment, so Dr Shirin Lakhani prescribed Tretinoin and Melamix and told me to use this every day.  On the 20th of January, I had my 3-Step Peel™ at Wigmore Medical.

I arrived at Wigmore Medical and had a numbing cream applied for twenty minutes. The doctor then talked me through the treatment and asked me some questions to ensure that I had been using my products correctly. There was only a slight bit of discomfort when the 3-Step Peel™ was applied but I found on the second and third day the skin very tight and uncomfortable. The results are worth everything I went through with the preparation and the peel. I am very happy with the results and would definitely recommend this peel and I cannot wait to have my next one!”

Post-Workout Acne

Sweaty gym environments combined with a lazy skincare routine can cause all sorts of problems! Exercise obviously causes sweating which is why without the proper post-workout cleanse; breakouts or dehydration can occur. If you already suffer from problem skin such as oily skin, then skipping on cleansing makes you a real victim to post-workout acne.

Avoiding Post-Workout Acne

Of course, prevention is always easier than treatment and with post-workout acne, and there is actually quite a lot you can do to help yourself.

Sweaty Skin

Sweat is unavoidable when you have a good workout, and of course, it’s necessary to help balance your body temperature out. But when your sweat mixes with the natural body oils, product residue and potential dirt that has been pushed out of your pores during the workout; this can lead to trouble. Leaving your skin (both face and body) unwashed for too long after a workout is a breeding ground for acne. This gross mixture could re-settle into your skin, blocking pores and inflaming skin leading to acne breakouts.  Your body could be especially prone to post-workout acne if your wear tight-fitting exercise clothes. So try to wear loose-fitting clothing or go for the outfits specifically designed for working out, with moisture-absorbing abilities. Plus, of course, just try to take a shower as soon as you can after your workout.

Dirty Equipment

Gym equipment is enemy number one when it comes to your skin. Yoga mats, weights and exercise machines all tend to harbour bacteria and dirt collected from use by lots of different (sweaty) people. Yuck! So, to avoid transferring bacteria to the skin and prevent post-workout acne, always wipe down your equipment before and after every use. Also, try to avoid touching your face or any other areas that are prone to breaking out.

post-workout acne

Treating Post-Workout Acne

If you haven’t managed to avoid the dreaded post-gym breakout. Don’t worry. We’ve got some tips to help you treat it.

  • To treat blemishes, use products with salicylic acid in them. So we recommend cleansing your skin with the Offects® Exfoliating Cleanser which will help to gently remove impurities and excess oil. What’s more, it’s exfoliating ingredients, including salicylic acid, unclog pores, ease out blackheads and keep skin clear.
  • If you want to disguise your acne, till it goes away, use the Offects® Correct and Conceal Acne Treatment. This is a concealer for acne designed to both cover visible blemishes and provide an effective spot treatment. This concealer is also an anti-inflammatory to calm the skin and soothe redness as well as helping the skin clear away bacteria to reduce breakouts.
  • For a deep-pore treatment, use the Offects® Sulfur Masque. This face mask for oily skin absorbs surface oil, sloughs off dead skin cells and removes dirt from pores to leave you with refreshed skin. Formulated with 10% sulfur for an extremely effective acne treatment; the Offects® Sulfur Masque reduces sebum production and calms irritated skin. What’s more, this face mask includes ingredients to replenish hydration in the skin and restore skin’s barrier function to avoid future damage. So, your skin won’t feel parched or stripped of its natural oils.

How Severe is Your Acne?

Everyone has heard of acne but did you know there are different types and levels of severity to it? Spots appear when your pores get clogged and filled with sebum and dead skin cells. But not all experience the same level of this condition. acne

The 4 Stages of Acne

  • Mild

The first stage usually presents a small concentration of pimples or blackheads or a combination of both on the skin. Inflammation is not usually associated with it and it does not happen on a daily basis.

  • Moderate

It occurs in men and women at any age. Blackheads, pustules, papules and pimples may form on the skin. It occurs more frequently and with more redness or inflammation around the affected area.

  • Moderate-severe

Inflammation is the most obvious change in the third stage. The area becomes red, irritated and inflamed. Cysts, papules and nodules may also be present.

  • Severe

This stage is extremely painful with numerous pustules, cysts, papules and nodules in the affected area or in various parts of the body.

ZO Skin Health and Medical offers a wide range of products designed to remove oil, normalise pore size, help smooth skin’s surface, and reduce inflammation and irritation.

How To Fight Signs of Ageing

anti ageing tips

Do you want to grow old gracefully? Then follow our top tips on preventing, protecting and fighting against signs of ageing.

Use Your Skincare Products as Directed

While this might sound like common sense, it’s very common practice for some to go overboard with their skincare. Whether it’s excitement at having a new product or impatient at slow results. Active ingredients can do more harm than good when used too much. Applying more than recommended can cause clogged pores, an uneven complexion and many other unwanted effects. So just be patient and follow instructions to get the best results.

Stop Using Products that Sting or Burn Unless Prescribed by a Dermatologist

Irritating the skin makes signs of ageing more noticeable. Some anti-ageing products prescribed by a dermatologist may burn or sting.  When using a prescription anti-ageing product, this can be okay. Just be sure to let your dermatologist know.

Give the Product Time to Work

As mentioned above, while a hydrator can immediately plump up fine lines, most products take some time for results to appear, so be patient.

Do Not Sunbathe

Regardless of whether you get your tan from natural sunlight or a tanning bed, these are both dangerous practices. This is because you are exposing your skin to harmful UV rays that can accelerate ageing, such as an onset of wrinkles, brown spots and a blotchy complexion. What’s more, it can cause skin cancer. As an alternative, if you are absolutely desperate for a tan, why not apply a self-tanning cream to achieve a summer glow, the safe way.

tannin ageing

Sun Protection

Speaking of harmful UV rays, you must wear an SPF year round to protect your skin. 80% of UV rays still penetrate a cloudy sky, so you’re still susceptible to sun damage, even it’s not blazing hot. Why not use the Oclipse® Sunscreen + Primer. This multi-tasking beauty works to protect your skin and doubles as a makeup primer!

If you Smoke, Stop Now!

Apart from the countless health complications, smoking also greatly speeds up ageing skin. It causes wrinkles as well as a dull, sallow complexion.

Avoid Repetitive Facial Expressions

When you make a facial expression, such as squinting or frowning you contract the underlying muscles. If you repeatedly contract the same muscles for many years, these lines become permanent. So try to get out of the habit.

Follow ZO’s Recommended Daily Skincare Program

The Nontraditional Skin Health Restoration For All Skin Types

skin health restorationTraditional dermatologic treatments typically address the skin surface and symptoms without improving cellular function or overall skin condition. While this may enhance the skin’s appearance, results vary widely and are usually short-lived since the source of the problem is never addressed. Reasons for this may include the physician’s personal approach, patient noncompliance, product efficacy (penetration, amount of application), patient skin type (thick, thin, oily, dry) or development of resistance to certain products. Dr. Obagi’s new skin health restoration program eliminates most – if not all – of these variables with a standard treatment approach to any skin problem. By taking this approach, program results are consistent, reproducible by any physician and achievable by any patient.

Skin Health Restoration Overview

  • Overcome skin resistance to medical topical agents by limiting their use since skin can acquire tolerance and resistance to many topical agents, leading to  treatment failure and complications.
  • Incorporate non-medical products into the maintenance phase that can be used indefinitely.
  • Adopt an early, effective, daily and preventative program using non-medical products that work to keep skin looking and acting healthy.
  • Normalize barrier function, as compromised barrier function is the most common cause of persistent sensitivity, chronic dryness and susceptibility to inflammation and treatment intolerance.
  • Protect and repair DNA since damaged DNA is responsible for cellular dysfunction, inadequate renewal, mutation and skin cancer.
  • Eliminate chronic skin inflammation, which is a common cause of treatment intolerance, failure and sensitivity.
  • Stabilise the skin by increasing its tolerance and resistance to damaging factors.
