Oily Skin Hydration: 3 Easy Ways to Winterproof Your Skin Without Breaking Out

Winter is in full swing which means you need to up your skincare game so as to keep your complexion balanced, hydrated and radiant. The cold dry air, coupled with even dryer indoor heating, takes a toll on all skin types. But for those of us struggling with oily skin the issue is twofold – how do we give our skin a hydration boost while keeping the T-zone shine at bay?

oily skin hydration, girl cleaning her face
Here is our action plan to help you hydrate, nourish and protect your skin in the winter without exacerbating oiliness and causing breakouts:

#1 Swap your gritty scrub for a gentle cleanser

There is no denying exfoliation is a crucial part of your skincare routine. However, over-exfoliating can do a real number on your skin, especially in the winter. When temperatures dip down and the wind whips up, you want to help your skin lock in as much moisture as possible. If you are scrubbing too hard and too frequently, you are not only removing excess oils but also getting rid of healthy cells and compromising your skin’s protective barrier. When natural moisture escapes from the skin, your sebaceous glands go into a frenzy and produce even more oil, trying to compensate for the loss of hydration.

So, instead of keeping your skin clean and smooth, you are doing the exact opposite – stimulating more sebum production. If you don’t want to get trapped in this vicious cycle, take a break from gritty exfoliators. Instead, switch to a gentle cleanser that cleans your skin thoroughly but doesn’t strip its natural moisture.

Offects® Exfoliating Cleanser combines BHA, to gently remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, whilst nourishing lipids boost hydration and skin softness. Use it daily to keep excess oil under control and give your skin the extra nourishment it needs in the winter.

#2 Use non-comedogenic sunscreen

We should all be in the habit of putting on sunscreen every day and reapplying it regularly – all year round. But most products on the high street are chalky and greasy and when you are in an eternal battle with shine and oiliness, the last thing you want to do is put a layer of thick, pore-clogging sunscreen on your face.

oily skin hydration, oclipse® daily sheer

However, this is not a good excuse to skip sun protection. Oclipse® Daily Sheer SPF 50 has a special, non-greasy formula that blends seamlessly into the skin and gives it a sheer matte finish. It dries quickly and provides broad-spectrum protection with zero chances of breakouts.

#3 Add a serum to your routine

People with oily skin often (and wrongly) avoid serums thinking their thick formula will exacerbate oiliness. The truth is that serums are serious hydration boosters and work for all skin types, including oily skin. If you want to nourish your skin without clogging your pores, serums are the much better choice that thick crèmes and moisturisers. The molecule structures of serums are smaller, so they can penetrate the skin surface deeper than moisturisers and hydrate the skin from within.

Ossential® C-Bright Serum contains naturally occurring lipids that support skin barrier restoration and help skin’s natural hydration process. It also helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and even your complexion.

5 Skincare Resolutions to Follow in 2018

Yes, it’s that time of the year again! That time when we are all promising ourselves that in the New Year we will hit the gym harder, eat better, work harder at our jobs, but also make more time for our hobbies. Usually by the end of February our enthusiasm has drained, and we go to the gym every fortnight and drink soda instead of a smoothie.

This year instead of making big promises,  we are unlikely to keep, we have put together 5 small easy tips to help you with your skincare resolutions, that are going to make a big difference for your skin.

1. I will wash my makeup brushes at least once a month.

skincare resolutions, clean makeup brushes

Makeup and oils from your skin build up on your brushes making them a breeding ground for bacteria. Ideally you should be cleaning your brushes every week, but it’s more realistic to make a monthly commitment. Wash them with lukewarm water and gentle soap and leave them to dry thoroughly.

2. I will exfoliate regularly

skincare resolutions, exfoliating

Baby’s skin takes 14 days to replenish itself completely. With ageing the skin dries out quicker and takes longer to replenish. If you don’t want your skin to lose its smoothness and glow, you need a good exfoliator to remove dead cell build-ups and kick-start the renewal process. Make sure you use products that clean your skin without breaking its natural barrier. Offects® Exfoliating Polish contains vitamins C, A and E that give your skin an antioxidant protection and preserve its natural hydration. Exfoliate regularly to achieve a smooth, glowing complexion.

3. I will wear sunscreen every single day

skincare resolution, sun protection, SPF

Smoking and  unprotected sun exposure are the top reasons for premature ageing. Forget about tanning this year and apply SPF every time you are about to go outside. Yes, in the winter months, too! Don’t use a sunscreen with a SPF lower than 15 even if you don’t burn easily. In sunscreen feels “heavy” on your skin, choose a non-greasy formula such as the Oclipse® Daily Sheer which blends seamlessly into the skin and gives you a long-lasting protection.

4. I won’t skip cleansing before bed.

skincare resolutions, face washing

After a long hard day at the office it might be tempting to skip your cleansing routine and head to bed or just use makeup wipes. While swap and slumber is quick and convenient, makeup wipes are not a friend of your skin.  They often contain detergent chemicals that can be highly irritable and more importantly wipes will not remove all the dirt from your pores.

So, if you don’t rinse your face after using makeup wipes or, even worse, don’t clean your makeup at all, you are likely to wake up with a breakout. You will enjoy much healthier skin this year, if you toss out the makeup wipes and resolve to a nightly wash with a gentle and hydrating cleanser.

5. I will stick to my resolutions and my skincare regimen.

skincare resolutions, 2018 goals

It is natural to expect immediate results when you start a new skincare regimen. However, some product and ingredients take weeks or even months to work. And ultimately, beautiful skin requires a continuous, lifelong routine. Don’t give up on your skincare regimen, if you don’t see the expected results straight away, it takes time. Take a few steps now and your skin will thank you later.

Anti-Ageing in Your Twenties

Is it ever too early to start using anti-ageing products? The short answer is no. Prevention is always easier than treatment so starting the fight against ageing in your twenties is a smart move.

Anti-Ageing in Your Twenties

Prevention Over Treatment

The skin is no different to any other organ in the body that suffers age-related degeneration. It’s much easier to prevent the decline than it is to reverse the process after it has happened.

To give your skin a fighting chance, you need to start taking care of it from a young age. However, that does not mean that solely using an anti-ageing cream lets you off the hook. Alongside using the right products such as ZO’s Ommerse® Renewal Crème  and Ommerse® Overnight Recovery Crème, you need to unlearn bad habits like leaving your makeup on overnight. By leaving makeup on, your pores get clogged, you get breakouts and your skin is just generally left looking dull and worse-for-wear. So it is essential that you always cleanse your skin properly before you go to bed.

Additionally, one of the biggest mistakes made by those in their twenties, is overlooking the importance of protecting skin from the sun. Exposure to the sun, no matter if its bright blue skies or a dull, overcast day, the UV rays emitted from the sun are harmful and damaging to the skin. Thus for skin to remain healthy and taut as you age, twenty-somethings should get a lead on using sunscreen like Oclipse® Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30. Not only does this product protect your skin from harmful UV rays and HEV light (the blue light omitted from smartphones) but it also doubles up as a makeup primer! A very nifty thing to have in your skincare routine!

ZO Medical 3-Step Peel™

For this particular acne case, Ella was recommended the 3-Step Peel™.

This peel is a solution of 17% salicylic acid, 10% trichloracetic and 5% lactic acids to remove the outer layers of the skin. A 6% retinol crème is then applied following the peel solution to stimulate deeper layers of the skin maximising collagen production, cellular renewal, anti-oxidant benefits and DNA protection. The retinol stimulation is continued with an at-home application at least 5 hours after the peel solution is applied in the clinic. A calming crème, which is hydrating and anti-inflammatory, is also given for at home application 3 times daily.

Find out more about the 3-Step Peel™.

Ella’s peel story

Ella experienced redness and peeling skin for 8 days following the peel, hear about her experience of the peel and the amazing results:

“After suffering from acne for the last three years, in November 2015 I had finally had enough. I had tried to clear up my skin with every method you could imagine, I even found out what my blood type was and kept to a very strict diet. So I turned to ZO for help. I was advised to have the 3-Step Peel™ and told I would have to prepare.

I was advised to have the 3 Step Peel and told I would have to prepare my skin before treatment, so Dr Shirin Lakhani prescribed Tretinoin and Melamix and told me to use this every day.  On the 20th of January, I had my 3-Step Peel™ at Wigmore Medical.

I arrived at Wigmore Medical and had a numbing cream applied for twenty minutes. The doctor then talked me through the treatment and asked me some questions to ensure that I had been using my products correctly. There was only a slight bit of discomfort when the 3-Step Peel™ was applied but I found on the second and third day the skin very tight and uncomfortable. The results are worth everything I went through with the preparation and the peel. I am very happy with the results and would definitely recommend this peel and I cannot wait to have my next one!”

Post-Workout Acne

Sweaty gym environments combined with a lazy skincare routine can cause all sorts of problems! Exercise obviously causes sweating which is why without the proper post-workout cleanse; breakouts or dehydration can occur. If you already suffer from problem skin such as oily skin, then skipping on cleansing makes you a real victim to post-workout acne.

Avoiding Post-Workout Acne

Of course, prevention is always easier than treatment and with post-workout acne, and there is actually quite a lot you can do to help yourself.

Sweaty Skin

Sweat is unavoidable when you have a good workout, and of course, it’s necessary to help balance your body temperature out. But when your sweat mixes with the natural body oils, product residue and potential dirt that has been pushed out of your pores during the workout; this can lead to trouble. Leaving your skin (both face and body) unwashed for too long after a workout is a breeding ground for acne. This gross mixture could re-settle into your skin, blocking pores and inflaming skin leading to acne breakouts.  Your body could be especially prone to post-workout acne if your wear tight-fitting exercise clothes. So try to wear loose-fitting clothing or go for the outfits specifically designed for working out, with moisture-absorbing abilities. Plus, of course, just try to take a shower as soon as you can after your workout.

Dirty Equipment

Gym equipment is enemy number one when it comes to your skin. Yoga mats, weights and exercise machines all tend to harbour bacteria and dirt collected from use by lots of different (sweaty) people. Yuck! So, to avoid transferring bacteria to the skin and prevent post-workout acne, always wipe down your equipment before and after every use. Also, try to avoid touching your face or any other areas that are prone to breaking out.

Treating Post-Workout Acne

If you haven’t managed to avoid the dreaded post-gym breakout. Don’t worry. We’ve got some tips to help you treat it.

  • To treat blemishes, use products with salicylic acid in them. So we recommend cleansing your skin with the Offects® Exfoliating Cleanser which will help to gently remove impurities and excess oil. What’s more, it’s exfoliating ingredients, including salicylic acid, unclog pores, ease out blackheads and keep skin clear.
  • If you want to disguise your acne, till it goes away, use the Offects® Correct and Conceal Acne Treatment. This is a concealer for acne designed to both cover visible blemishes and provide an effective spot treatment. This concealer is also an anti-inflammatory to calm the skin and soothe redness as well as helping the skin clear away bacteria to reduce breakouts.
  • For a deep-pore treatment, use the Offects® Sulfur Masque. This face mask for oily skin absorbs surface oil, sloughs off dead skin cells and removes dirt from pores to leave you with refreshed skin. Formulated with 10% sulfur for an extremely effective acne treatment; the Offects® Sulfur Masque reduces sebum production and calms irritated skin. What’s more, this face mask includes ingredients to replenish hydration in the skin and restore skin’s barrier function to avoid future damage. So, your skin won’t feel parched or stripped of its natural oils.

How To Fight Signs of Ageing

anti ageing tips

Do you want to grow old gracefully? Then follow our top tips on preventing, protecting and fighting against signs of ageing.

Use Your Skincare Products as Directed

While this might sound like common sense, it’s very common practice for some to go overboard with their skincare. Whether it’s excitement at having a new product or impatient at slow results. Active ingredients can do more harm than good when used too much. Applying more than recommended can cause clogged pores, an uneven complexion and many other unwanted effects. So just be patient and follow instructions to get the best results.

Stop Using Products that Sting or Burn Unless Prescribed by a Dermatologist

Irritating the skin makes signs of ageing more noticeable. Some anti-ageing products prescribed by a dermatologist may burn or sting.  When using a prescription anti-ageing product, this can be okay. Just be sure to let your dermatologist know.

Give the Product Time to Work

As mentioned above, while a hydrator can immediately plump up fine lines, most products take some time for results to appear, so be patient.

Do Not Sunbathe

Regardless of whether you get your tan from natural sunlight or a tanning bed, these are both dangerous practices. This is because you are exposing your skin to harmful UV rays that can accelerate ageing, such as an onset of wrinkles, brown spots and a blotchy complexion. What’s more, it can cause skin cancer. As an alternative, if you are absolutely desperate for a tan, why not apply a self-tanning cream to achieve a summer glow, the safe way.

tannin ageing

Sun Protection

Speaking of harmful UV rays, you must wear an SPF year round to protect your skin. 80% of UV rays still penetrate a cloudy sky, so you’re still susceptible to sun damage, even it’s not blazing hot. Why not use the Oclipse® Sunscreen + Primer. This multi-tasking beauty works to protect your skin and doubles as a makeup primer!

If you Smoke, Stop Now!

Apart from the countless health complications, smoking also greatly speeds up ageing skin. It causes wrinkles as well as a dull, sallow complexion.

Avoid Repetitive Facial Expressions

When you make a facial expression, such as squinting or frowning you contract the underlying muscles. If you repeatedly contract the same muscles for many years, these lines become permanent. So try to get out of the habit.

Follow ZO’s Recommended Daily Skincare Program

Tips on treating large pores

Enlarged pores are very frustrating when all you want is to have smooth, firm, tight and youthful-looking skin. Correcting large pores can be a challenge, but not impossible, you just need to stay dedicated to your skincare routine. So how can you shrink pores?

shrink pores

Cleanse

Make sure that you use a cleanser designed for oily skin. When shopping, look for a cleanser that includes ingredients like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or lactic acid. Massage this cleanser twice a day into skin for one full minute, as it takes this long to break down sebum. Even if you think you have a ‘normal’ skin type, we’d recommend a cleanser for oily skin, like the Offects Exfoliating Cleanser.

Exfoliate

To help shrink pores you need to get rid of dead surface skin cells and help promote and stimulate cell renewal. If you don’t exfoliate regularly, dead surface cells will build up and make skin appear dull and dry. Plus, they can clog pores which then results in breakouts. If you’re worried that exfoliating is too harsh for your skin, the Offects Exfoliating Polish has round magnesium crystals so as not to irritate the skin.

Tone

A toner like the Offects TE-Pads Acne Pore Treatment is excellent for deeply cleaning out pores. Each pad is soaked in a combination of salicylic and glycolic acid, helping to exfoliate the skin and speed up cell renewal. In the process helping to shrink pores too.

Retinol

High potency retinol products like the Ossential Advanced Radical Night Repair can help to shrink pore size by decreasing oil gland activity. This product features the highest concentration of retinol in an over-the-counter product (5x-10x higher than traditional retinol products).

Microdermabrasion

Administered by a professional aesthetician, microdermabrasion can help exfoliate the skin but it’s not a permanent solution.

The 6 Types of Acne Skin

Acne skin is caused when hair follicles become blocked. Hair follicles are tiny holes in the skin from which an individual hair grows out of. Attached to these hair follicles are sebaceous glands which can be found near the surface of your skin. Sebaceous glands prevent your hair and skin from drying out by producing an oily substance called sebum. However, these glands can sometimes produce too much sebum which then mixes with dead skin cells which consequently blocks your follicles and thus causes acne.

acne skin

6 Different Types of Acne Skin

The plugged follicle can react in different ways, which is why your spots can appear different. There are six main different types of acne breakouts:

  • blackheads – appear if the plugged follicle is open to the skin, creating small black or yellowish bumps that develop on the skin; they are not filled with dirt but are black because the inner lining of the hair follicle produces pigmentation
  • whiteheads – are caused if the plugged follicle is close to the surface of the skin, which then bulges outwards. They have a similar appearance to blackheads, but they can be firmer and will not empty when squeezed.

Furthermore, normally harmless bacteria that lives on the skin can then contaminate and infect these plugged follicles forming:

  • papules – which are small red bumps that may feel tender or sore
  • pustules – which are similar to papules, but have a white tip in the centre that is caused by a build-up of pus
  • nodules – are large hard lumps that build up beneath the surface of the skin and can be painful
  • cysts – are the most severe type of spot caused by acne; they are large pus-filled lumps that look similar to boils and carry the greatest risk of causing permanent scarring

Proven triggers

  • Testosterone – Teenage acne is thought to be triggered by increased levels of a hormone called testosterone, which occurs during puberty. The sebaceous glands are particularly sensitive to hormones. It is thought that increased levels of testosterone cause the glands to produce much more sebum than the skin needs.
  • Hereditary – Acne skin can run in families. If your parents had acne, it’s likely that you will also develop it. One study has found that if both your parents had acne, you are more likely to get more severe acne at an early age. It also found that if one or both of your parents had adult acne, you are more likely to get adult acne too.
  • Periods & Pregnancy – More than 80% of cases of adult acne occur in women. It is thought that many cases are caused by the changes in hormone levels that many women have at certain times from their periods or during pregnancy.
  • Medication – certain medications, such as steroid medications, lithium (which is often used to treat depression and bipolar disorder) and some anti-epileptic drugs (used to treat epilepsy) can cause a flare-up of acne.
  • Smoking – is often a cause of acne found in older people.
  • Accessories – regularly wearing items such as a headband or backpack, which places pressure on a targeted area can sometimes be the cause of an acne flare-up.

The Nontraditional Skin Health Restoration For All Skin Types

skin health restorationTraditional dermatologic treatments typically address the skin surface and symptoms without improving cellular function or overall skin condition. While this may enhance the skin’s appearance, results vary widely and are usually short-lived since the source of the problem is never addressed. Reasons for this may include the physician’s personal approach, patient noncompliance, product efficacy (penetration, amount of application), patient skin type (thick, thin, oily, dry) or development of resistance to certain products. Dr. Obagi’s new skin health restoration program eliminates most – if not all – of these variables with a standard treatment approach to any skin problem. By taking this approach, program results are consistent, reproducible by any physician and achievable by any patient.

Skin Health Restoration Overview

  • Overcome skin resistance to medical topical agents by limiting their use since skin can acquire tolerance and resistance to many topical agents, leading to  treatment failure and complications.
  • Incorporate non-medical products into the maintenance phase that can be used indefinitely.
  • Adopt an early, effective, daily and preventative program using non-medical products that work to keep skin looking and acting healthy.
  • Normalize barrier function, as compromised barrier function is the most common cause of persistent sensitivity, chronic dryness and susceptibility to inflammation and treatment intolerance.
  • Protect and repair DNA since damaged DNA is responsible for cellular dysfunction, inadequate renewal, mutation and skin cancer.
  • Eliminate chronic skin inflammation, which is a common cause of treatment intolerance, failure and sensitivity.
  • Stabilise the skin by increasing its tolerance and resistance to damaging factors.
