Adult Acne Vs Teenage Acne Causes

You might think that acne is something that only teenagers suffer from, but adult acne can affect up to 55% of us! You may wonder how acne in adulthood differs from the type you suffered from as a teenager, and there’s quite a difference, from causes to how it’s treated.

Adult Acne

Adult acne differs from teenage acne. Adults who suffer from acne tend to have breakouts on their chin and around their mouths and jawlines. This is caused by slower cell turnover, which allows oil to build up and cause inflammation, cystic acne and pimples.

Adult skin is more delicate than teenage skin and tends to dry quicker. This means that acne treatments will need to be gentler on the skin. Look for salicylic acid products with a lower percentage, like our ZO Skin Health range.

What causes teenage acne?

Teenage acne usually starts in puberty, when our sebaceous glands start producing oil. Teenage acne tends to show up all over the face, and back, chest and shoulders.

The best way to treat teenage skin breakouts is with a more aggressive approach. Teenage skin is a lot more durable and thicker than adult skin. Also young skin that produces too much oil needs more aggressive treatments to reduce the presence of p.acnes bacteria and dry up all that oil that causes the areas around nose and cheeks to shine. Our ZO Medical range is perfect for a more aggressive approach.

Fortunately, the ZO® Skin Health and ZO® Medical ranges offer formulations that are suited to treat all types of acne for women and men of all ages, from blackheads to bacne.

The Dangers of HEV light on your skin

Did you know that on average we spend about 10 hours a day looking at computers, smartphones on tablets? If you did, did you also know that HEV light from this could be affecting your skin?

The blue light, or high-energy visible light emitted from our electronic devices can affect our vision and sleep patterns, but it can also affect your skin. HEV light exposure can lead to pigment changes, and accelerated development of fine lines and wrinkles.

This is because HEV light impairs the skin’s natural barrier function. Rather than cause burning or redness, it goes deeper than UV rays, damaging the skin’s collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid supplies. HEV also affects the melanin production of the skin, which can create hyperpigmentation and discolouration in the skin.

How can we block HEV light?

While most skincare products are only just starting to add HEV blockers to their ingredient list, ZO Skin Health already offers complete protection from HEV light.

Some of our products that include HEV protection are:

  • Oclipse® Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30. This combination product shields skin from UVA/UVB, HEV light, and IR-A (infrared rays), all while smoothing skin and minimizing the look of lines and wrinkles. It also features a universal tint. (Oclipse® Smart Tone SPF 50 kicks the SPF up a notch to maximize the benefits of this products.)
  • Oclipse® Sun Spray SPF 50. For those who prefer a spray, this product shields skin from both UVA/UVB, HEV and IR-A via a one touch, all-angle spray system.
  • Oclipse Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50. Sensitive skin? Not a problem.  This sunscreen shields skin from HEV, UV and IR-A. Made with fractionated melanin, the formula protects even the most sensitive skin and comprises a blend of powerful antioxidants to prevent free radical damage.

Prevention is key, and sunscreens that block HEV light can help protect skin from damage, but if you are already noticing brown pigment spots, ZO skin health has you covered:

The super-potent Melamin™ Skin Bleaching & Correcting Crème contains 4% hydroquinone to bleach and lighten skin. Brightenex, available in two strengths, helps even skin colour and tone. It can be used as a first step in treating hyperpigmentation or a maintenance product. Another best-seller is Ossential® Brightalive Non-Retinol Skin Brightener which treats hyperpigmentation without the use of retinol and hydroquinone, making it an ideal choice for sensitive skin.

Protect your skin during flu season

It’s that time of year, where the flu seems to be going around everywhere. As much as you can try to prevent it by keeping hands clean, using anti-bacterial products and getting a flu-shot, there’s still a chance to get sick.

As well as making you feel achy, feverish and congested, the flu can wreak havoc on your skin. Illness can make your skin dry, irritated, with puffy eyes and a higher risk of cold sores and other skin issues.

So how can we look after our skin when we’re sick? We’ve put together our top tips to protect your skin as best as possible while you’re under the weather.

Wash your hands.

Keeping your hands clean during flu season is essential in staving off the virus, but over washing can also lead to dry skin on your hands. Use a moisturising cleanser to keep your hands clean, and use a hand cream after each wash to avoid dryness.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is essential when you’re feeling ill, as it helps your body stay hydrated. This also gives a bonus to your skin, as it hydrates from within, and prevents cracked skin around the nose and mouth.

Cold Showers

While you might want to crank the heat up in the shower, subjecting your skin to long hot showers strips it of essential oils. This can lead to dry, irritated skin. We recommend lukewarm temperature for 10 minutes or less while you recover.

Blowing your nose

Constantly having to blow your nose can make your nose red, dry and irritated. Try to avoid scented tissues, as these can irritate the skin even more. Better yet, use tissues enhanced with hydrating ingredients, such as aloe vera.

Put down the exfoliant!

While you’re sick, your skin is more susceptible to dryness. To avoid making this worse, take a break from harsh exfoliants and irritating skincare ingredients such as acids, retinol or scrubs, and instead switch to a gentle routine with hydrating ingredients.

How to combat winter dull complexions

How to combat winter dull complexions

Summer has been and gone, and we’re seeing winter arrive. If the cold weather and dark evenings weren’t enough, a dull complexion often comes along with the season. We’ve put together our top tips to mix up your skincare regime to combat winter dullness.

Exfoliate

Skin gets that glowy, lit from within look when it’s smooth enough to reflect light. Unfortunatly as we age, cell turnover slows, and dead skin cells can pile up, diffusing light and creating dullness. This is exacerbated in winter, when skin gets naturally drier from the elements. If you exfoliate every morning and night, you’ll slough away the dead skin cells, leading to a refreshed and revived complexion.

Ceramides

As well as exfoliation, your skin utilises natural enzymes to rid itself of dead cells. When your skin gets dry however, these enzymes become inefficient. If you use a product with ceramides in, they can reinforce your skin’s natural moisture barrier and help the natural exfoliation process. Some of our favourite ceramide containing products include Oraser Body Emulsion and Ommerse® Overnight Recovery Crème

Retinol

As glowing skin occurs when your skin reflects light well, a firm base is essential to combat that winter dullness. Use a cream with retinol to help stimulate collagen production which will help your skin regain firmness. If you’ve never used retinol before, you should be aware of initial side effects, such as skin dryness and peeling. This will subside as your skin gets used to the product, and then you’ll start to see the amazing benefits.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that can brighten the skin and fade sun spots, which can make your skin look flat and dull. The ZO Skin Health Ossential® C-Bright Serum provides a potent dose of pure vitamin C that is stabilised to brighten and re-texturise the skin. This serum maximises the exfoliation and brightening effects, revealing radiant, even-toned skin. Plus, this vitamin C serum also helps to minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

How Long Skincare Ingredients Take To Work

A common query when starting a new skincare regime, or trying a new product is – “How long will it take to work?”. It can be confusing to get your head around each ingredient in your skincare, and understand how long it’ll be before you see results. We’ve rounded up the common skincare ingredients, and how long it will take for them to work wonders on your skin.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

AHAs are perfect for exfoliating dry and sensitive skin. They can help with age spots, skin discoloration and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles! The most commonly used AHAs you will see in your skincare items are glycolic acid, mandelic acid and lactic acid.
When you’ll see results: You’ll be able to see a brighter complexion straight away, although it will take 4-6 months of consistent use for AHA’s to stimulate the production of collagen and minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
Some of our favourite AHA containing ZO® products include GlyocgentOffects® TE-Pads and Invisapeel.

Ceramides

Ceramides are a family of waxy lipid molecules composed of sphingosine and a fatty acid. Ceramides are found in high concentrations within the cell membrane and comprise the bulk of the lipid layer, which holds the skin’s cells together in a firm, smooth structure. They maintain the moisture-retention ability of the skin. A decrease in the level of ceramides results in the skin becoming dry and hard, leading to fine lines and wrinkles and an impaired barrier function.
When you’ll see results: Ceramides work on the surface of the skin on the lipid layer, so you’ll see results almost immediately.
Some of our favourite ceramide containing products include Oraser Body Emulsion and Ommerse® Overnight Recovery Crème

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid boosts skin’s moisture content and helps prevent moisture loss. Found in high concentrations in the skin, hyaluronic acid provides continuous moisture to the skin by binding up to 1,000 times its weight in water. It gives a smoother, dewier complexion.
When you’ll see results: Hyaluronic Acid gets to work straight away, and can give the appearance of plumper skin in minutes.
Some of our favourite hyaluronic acid products include Liprebuild and Hydrafirm.

Caffeine

Caffeine works to reduce puffiness around the eyes, and also reducing the look of dark circles.
When you’ll see results: Caffeine can reduce tired looking eye in a few hours. You can find it in ZO Medical Hydrafirm Eye Brightening Repair Crème

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a great ingredient for treating acne and oily skin. It works by exfoliating and cleansing pores, as well as calming inflammation.
When you’ll see results: To get full results, use a product with salicylic acid for about 12 weeks.
Offects® Exfoliating CleanserOraser® Microderm Hand Renewal and Offects® Te-Pads Acne Pore Treatment all contain salicylic acid.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C works as a antioxidant, stopping the production of pigment to fade dark spots and even complexions.
When you’ll see results: You’ll start to notice a difference after about three weeks of introducing Vitamin C into your skincare regime.
ZO Skin Health Ossential® C-Bright Serum provides a potent dose of pure vitamin C that is stabilised to brighten and re-texturise the skin

Retinol

Retinol works to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as smoothing skin and improving tone.
When you’ll see results: Retinol can take a while to start working on your skin, as it affects epidermal renewal and collagen synthesis. Wait around 8-12 weeks for the first signs of improvement. You can find out more about retinol here.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl Peroxide is a high-strength acne treatment that kills bacteria that causes spots and blemishes, leading to a clear complexion.
When you’ll see results: It will take about three weeks for your skin to start to clear after starting to use benzoyl peroxide, with the full benefits after 12 weeks. You can find this ingredient in our ZO Medical Aknetrol.

Ingredient Spotlight: Retinol

The one ingredient that we’re hearing about time after time, it’s Retinol. We’re always reading about it’s benefits, from reducing the appearance of fine lines, or refining skin texture. It’s even been proved to reduce the appearance of pores. But what exactly is it, and why should you use it?

Retinol is the antioxidant derivative of Vitamin A. Vitamin A is a powerful ingredient that speeds up cell turnover, and protects the skin from free radical damage. This can prevent lines, wrinkles and spots from forming in the first place. It works by absorbing into the skin, and breaking down into retinoic acid. This is a compound that affects the chemistry of skin cells and their behaviours. This can help increase collagen production, and improve skin elasticity. It can also increase skin thickness, improve skin texture, and create a more even skin tone, making it an idea ingredient for those with skin discolouration, or damage from the sun.

If you’ve never used Retinol before, you should be aware of initial side effects, such as skin dryness and peeling. This will subside as your skin gets used to the product, and then you’ll start to see the amazing benefits.

The importance of a regular skincare regime

Why is it important to keep a regular skincare regime?

Keeping up a regular skincare regime can be difficult to juggle with a busy work and social life. With everything else going on in our lives, applying skincare products each morning and evening can be difficult to religiously keep up! However, keeping a regular skincare regime is a very important investment, that will lead to healthy and clear skin.

The skin is the largest organ in the human body, and we put it through harsh weather, pollution, UV damage and abrasion every day, so it’s so important to take good care of it. And there are so many benefits to maintaining a regular skin regime

skincare regime

Good Condition

Regular maintenance is the key to keeping your skin in good condition for years to come. Many people only think about starting a consistent skin regime after their skin shows signs of acne, congestion or ageing. However, keeping a regular skin regime can help prevent these issues, and should take no longer than 5 minutes every morning and evening.

Visible Results

A lot of people will try a new skincare product, only to give up after a few uses if they don’t see immediate results. Active ingredients and a regular skincare regime can take up to a few months before you start to see visible results – so don’t give up if you don’t see overnight results! Think of your skincare regime like an exercise routine, it takes consistent practice and time, but you will start to see subtle improvements if you keep at it.

AHAs & BHAs for Skin Exfoliation

Before we get into the breakdown of what a BHA or AHA is, and how they work, let’s look at the most important question. Why do we need to exfoliate? Helping you skin to exfoliate ensures the skin stays looking radiant, smooth and that the skin care products you apply are getting where they need to be.

woman face srcub, exfoliate, clean

How are they similar?

Both AHAs and BHAs are chemical exfoliators which make great alternatives to traditional grains and scrubs. They smooth the skin to improve the look of dull, uneven skin tone but both have their own unique qualities making them preferable for certain skin types and conditions. Let’s take a look at each one in a bit more detail.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

AHAs are water soluble which means they will only be effective on the top layer of the skin. This does make them perfect for someone who wants to exfoliate dry and sensitive skin. They are one of the most gentle effective exfoliants, so no more manual scrubbing which can cause extra damage and skin irritation. AHAs also have humectant properties, which means they hold moisture in the skin. AHAs can help with age spots, skin discoloration and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles! The most commonly used AHAs you will see in your skincare items are glycolic acid, mandelic acid and lactic acid.

Some of our favourite AHA containing ZO® products include Glyocgent, Offects® TE-Pads and Invisapeel.

Beta Hydroxy Acids

A big difference between AHAs and BHAs is that BHAs are oil soluble. This means that they can penetrate through any oil clogged pores, so they are working into a deeper level of the skin. BHAs are often used if you have tried to exfoliate with AHAs but need something a bit stronger, or of the needs of your skin have changed. They are generally encouraged for use on oily and acne prone skin, this is also due to their anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. The most commonly used BHA is Salicylic acid.

Many of our products contain BHAs, some of which include Offects® Exfoliating Cleanser, Cebatrol™ and Vitascrub™.

Something To Note

An important factor to remember with both AHAs and BHAs is you must wear a daily SPF 15 or higher! This is because where they exfoliate the skin’s surface, you will be more vulnerable to sun damage. The best direction is to apply your AHA or BHA product at night before bed, so it has time to really work on the skin, then apply SPF as part of your morning routine to keep you protected.
